GVM/GCM UPGRADE
Make sure your rig is road-ready, safe, and compliant
When payload disappears, safety is compromised.
Modern 4WDs are carrying more gear than ever. Accessories, touring setups, drawers, canopies, long-range tanks - it all adds up fast, and it’s increasingly common for vehicles to exceed their Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM). Add a caravan, boat, or trailer, and Gross Combination Mass (GCM) limits can be exceeded just as easily.
Exceeding GVM/GCM can negatively affect handling, braking, and component longevity - it’s a serious safety risk, and it can leave you exposed legally if something goes wrong. A properly engineered GVM/GCM upgrade ensures your vehicle remains road-ready, compliant, and capable.
Why GVM Matters
Running over GVM/GCM can lead to:
Reduced braking performance
Poor handling and ride quality
Excess stress on suspension and driveline components
Insurance and compliance risks
A certified GVM/GCM upgrade from ASG4X4 restores confidence by ensuring your vehicle is designed to safely carry the loads you actually use.
UpgradE YOUR VEHICLE

ASG4X4 GVM Upgrade Options
Carry More. Stay Safe. Stay Legal.
New Vehicle
(Pre-Registration)
Second Stage of Manufacture (SSM) GVM Upgrades
ASG4X4 is a federally approved SSM provider, allowing us to upgrade your vehicle’s GVM before first registration.
What this means:
Federally approved and recognised nationwide
Increased GVM and axle load ratings
Higher upgrade limits than post-registration options
All modifications are considered standard at registration
GCM* upgrades often included
Available only on brand-new, unregistered vehicles and built exactly to the approved specification.
IN-SERVICE Vehicle
(Post-Registration)
State-Based GVM Upgrades
For vehicles that are already registered, ASG4X4 offers post-registration GVM upgrades approved through state-based engineering.
What this means:
Available on in-service vehicles
Increased GVM through engineered suspension upgrades
State-specific compliance requirements
Typically lower upgrade limits than SSM
GCM* upgrades may be available subject to state regulations
A practical option when pre-registration upgrades are no longer possible.
*GCM (Gross Combination Mass) is the total weight of your vehicle plus any trailer or load. GCM upgrades are available on all Second Stage Manufacturing (SSM) or pre-registered vehicles nationwide. In-service vehicles may have restrictions depending on state regulations.
ASG4X4 SSM GVM Upgrades
Federally Approved. Built Right From Day One.
ASG4X4 is a federally approved Second Stage of Manufacture (SSM) provider, which means we can upgrade your vehicle’s GVM before it is first registered under a new federal approval.
Commonly referred to as Pre-Registration GVM upgrades, SSM is the most comprehensive and compliant way to increase your vehicle’s carrying capacity.
Through SSM approval, we can increase:
Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)
Axle load ratings
In many cases, Gross Combination Mass (GCM)*
Depending on the specific approval, this process may also include engineered changes to suspension, drivetrain, axles, track width, wheelbase, chassis length, or dual-cab conversions.
The result is a vehicle that is reclassified at registration, with all upgrades considered standard and fully compliant nationwide.
*GCM (Gross Combination Mass) is the total weight of your vehicle plus any trailer or load. GCM upgrades are available on all Second Stage Manufacturing (SSM) or pre-registered vehicles nationwide. In-service vehicles may have restrictions depending on state regulations.
-
Our Second Stage of Manufacture (SSM) approval reclassifies the vehicle before registration, meaning all modifications are considered standard from day one.
This delivers:
Nationwide compliance
Higher allowable GVM increases
Improved load carrying and towing confidence
No re-engineering when transferring registration between states
-
ASG4X4 SSM GVM upgrades are based on heavy-duty suspension and driveline components and supported by extensive engineering to meet Australian Design Rules (ADR).
The approval process includes:
Computer modelling of load-bearing components
On-road and track testing for handling and braking
Final federal approval
This ensures your vehicle performs safely under real-world loads - not just on paper.
-
Vehicles completed under SSM approval must be built exactly to the approved specification using listed components.
While this allows less flexibility than post-registration upgrades, it ensures:
Consistent build quality
Long-term reliability
Nationally recognised compliance
Once complied, ASG4X4 can then complete the rest of your build - ready for work, touring, or towing.
-
SSM GVM upgrades must be completed before first registration
Vehicles that have ever been registered are not eligible
Dealer-fitted accessories may need to be removed
Dealer cooperation and lead time are required
Early planning is essential when considering an ASG4X4 SSM GVM upgrade.
-
Advantages
Federally approved and recognised nationwide
Transferable between states without re-engineering
Approval remains valid if the vehicle is re-registered
GCM upgrades are often included
Higher GVM increases typically achievable
Considerations
Only available on brand-new, unregistered vehicles
Limited component flexibility
Requires advance planning prior to registration
